so we tip up at the studios - blue moon - in bodicote - (which way woodstock man), recommended by my friend nick bicat - film composer extraordinaire, as the best place to record a vocal. its not far from oxford, sort of ride a cock horse to banbury cross turn left and u r there. well it may be great for vocals and single guitars etc but its bloody cold. im afraid the days have gone when i can function on one bar fire and eights pairs of socks and a woolly hat. my voice needs vesuvian temperatures before it can be tempted out. and my fingers like stoney bones.... and the guitars wont stay in tune.. so i sneak over and put it on the full two bars and boil the kettle when frank and pete and mark the knobs man all venture outside for a fag. day one is them anyway ... putting down bass and drums which we do in one room.. all looking at each other, like u should. first acute lesson - dont go mad on a guide vocal. by 5 o clock i can hardly speak having been singing all day. mark says theres no such thing as a guide vocal - everything is usuable.. but then i hear that some people just whisper or talk their way through... i even hear that bono drinks yoghurt to give himself that cloggy got a cold sound..( i just thought he had a cold). by about 7 it seems inhuman to go any further. we laid down drums and bass to all the songs except the new one (which i'm still trying to finish) and also its as snug as a bug in a rug in the studio now.and i have to report - frank hockney on the drums is in the wrong job. he should give up making a mint at cowley car plant designing the ulta sexy new minis and become a full time drummer. that man is a human click track. and pete simpson.... well whats he doing nursing people through severe psychological trauma day in day out - he should be playing that big double bass in smoky caverns across the land, smoking his pipe and putting the real vertebrae into the music. some of his bass lines have a better melody than the melody ive written for the bloody songs godddammn him. so all cool so far dude, far out freaky psychadelic cats in the studio man. only the weak link left now to bugger it all up.... its over to me for the guitar and vocals.... its all downhill from here.
