09 07 09 + 7 - 6 BROADWAY

OK... too long since i got all this together i know.. BUT.. its just taking some time... or actually im taking some time deliberately, to get over my dads death, which comes up and surprises me at the most unpredicatable times. of course. BUT .. I m feeling back on track and most exciting of all... im taking la cage to broadway. not sure yet exactly which theatre... its a bit like landing planes at heathrow. i'll fly over march 1st - 4 weeks rehearsin with a new cast. open april... play for 6 months. so.. MAJOR UPHEAVAL. hope to see u there! someone was saying that the last la cage in new york just didnt work and that theyre wary of the show... im hoping we can show them that fabulous beating heart. not sure yet who will be my new 'lover'... there is even a small hope that i may come back in london and close the show here for xmas.. but that is all still up in the air and prob wont be decided for a month or so. BUT... may be shaving again, o mi gawd, before xmas. meantime.. ive written a musical ... called for the moment.. 'meantime'. aschlin ditta is writing the book - he of catherine tate and scenes of a sexual nature fame. its a completely new story, from scratch, set today based on nothing except our take on love and life. it follows a love affair across fifty years. ive written the music and lyrics. we had a recording session two weeks ago - matt rawle, krysten cummings. josephina gabrielle, denys lawson, shaun esscoffrey and my daughter mol. we had a reading of the book two days later - people like rory kinnear and indira varma harish patel and cillian murphy helping us out. we're now writing the next draft. my plan is to put up some music either here - if i can ever work out how to sort it all out - or on myspace. meanwhile ive had a few rehearsals and want to set up a gig or two in late august. phew. this time i will try to keep this page updated. but.... all exciting stuff. xx doug

Sorry we will be losing you to the States, our loss but their gain. You must be really excited and I am sure your performance will win them over. The new musical sounds interesting looking forward to some more music from you. Any chance of that second album the tracks on my space are wonderful, I especially like tall ships reminds me of my teens taking part in the tall ships races! Have we any tv or films to watch out for, how did Robin Hood go? Time does make grief easier I lost my mum to Alzheimers 5yrs ago, and still shed the occasional tear when events occur which I know she would have enjoyed, like the christening of my nephew last weekend.
Best Wishes and Good Luck with all your projects,
Pat

Hi Doug so pleased that you are doing so well, and I am very excited that you are going to broadway with La Cage, as I am going to New York in June next year to celebrate my 50th birthday along with twin sister and family, and I really hope that you will be performing on either 5/6/7th June 2010 as this would make my birthday. Keep up the good work Doug and I look forward to coming to see a gig soon. Denise

Hi Doug – so good to hear from you again and all the exciting news, especially La Cage on Broadway! The last version there, which I saw whilst visitng to support another play directed by my good friend Daniel Kramer, was truly dire! So show ‘em how it should be done in your own inimitable way, dear Doug! And wouldn’t it be great if you could close out the London show – do let us know in good time so that we can book to see it! And I’ll try to get to New York to see you too!!
Having lost both my parents, separately and a few years back now, I can empathise with your grief over your Dad but the happy memories to take over eventually though missing them never goes entirely, particularly on special occasions – but it’s good to remember and over time it eases the pain.
Take care of yourself and keep blogging!
Love to you and the family

PS: Forgot to say that I went to see Dimetos and thought it was a truly wonderful production, so well done you. The cast were well chosen and all gave amazing performances – I loved the depiction of the horse and its rescue from the well – but Jonathan Pryce was utterly outstanding in the title role. So many thanks to them and to you for yet another shining example of your directing talent.

Welcome back! Well it seems as though La Cage, New York and birthdays go together. It’s my birthday in April so have decided to go to New York to celebrate and, most importantly, to support you – just keep us informed of dates, theatre etc – New Yorkers won’t know what’s hit them!

See you in NY – Sheila

Tremendously excited to see you in New York! I saw you while I was studying abroad in London, and absolutely RAVED about the show to everyone back home in NY. Now I can take them to come see you!

Fantastic news that you are taking your definitive portrayal of Albin to Broadway. Show them how it’s done Doug! Have always wanted to go back to New York and now have the perfect reason – to support you in La Cage. Will start saving the pennies now! Hope they’ll do a new cast recording as well. Do hope you can close La Cage here too – that would be brilliant. Please keep us up to date.
Your musical sounds exciting, and what a line-up you had for the recording and read through of the book! Can’t wait to hear more.
Saw Dimetos – thought the opening and closing of Act 1 amazing, and as for Jonathan Pryce’s performance – a real tour-de-force – superb.
Wishing you every success in all you do.
