02 03 07 + 11 - 12 SONG 12

song 12 just done. its on myspace - but u need to turn up the volume. she said love is a continual never ending farewell
from the first kiss
the heart still seeks to fly
from even this

he said never give your whole heart
always keep a small part ,
turn tight and twist
the world can fade and change
from kiss to kiss

some people are the picture
some people are the frame
cant have one without the other
some never hear their names called
some will stay, foever in vain
and jesus had a brother called james

he said would u mind if i went now
this isnt really me somehow
i dont do this
the snow fell soft and cold
silence its gift

some people run away
some people play the game
some people seem blessed, some always get the blame
some will stay forever the same
they say jesus had a brother called james

let me in now please my mama
i can sense u there behind the door
i just need a place to rest this winter evening
in the morning i wont trouble u anymore

and you can throw stones and you can know better
sometimes a man doesnt come up to the letter
if ive let u down, iv let u down a thousand times
dont think that i havent felt ashamed
dont u know jesus had a brother called james

she said the hearts just a muscle
the harder the struggle the stronger u will be
is there a way home now still for me?

some things they are too much
sometimes we fail
some people can standby
some people are too frail to stand all alone
and alone remain
jesus had a brother called james
and this will go onward the same
as the snow disappears in the falling rain

doug - 09 03 07 - 22:10

Is it just me or has something odd happened to the music in your space? if it has, you should change your password..
marie - 16 03 07 - 23:57

Yes, something has definitely happened to your music, just went to try and listen and get great cut out! Thoroughly enjoyed Mansfield Park last night its great to be able to watch some decent drama, though I do wish somebody would record a few more theatre dramas like when you did ‘Three Sisters’. I know it’s not the same as being there, but its nice to sometimes see some of the plays which don’t get out into the sticks, like Pinter’s Celebration the other night. Hope you get your music sorted soon.

not sure whats happenin to this site – i dont have any access to it so if the music goes down not much i can do. basically im postin all the new stuff on myspace – just search for doug hodge. theres all the new guide tracks for most recent songs as we do them and they seem to b workin fine – althuogh myspace too does have its day and sometimes slips into the ether. last time i listened the songs were all there – even if the guide tracks are a bit rough – but ive def got the 12 or so songs now, and the bass and drums is done for most of them. that just leaves.. vocals guitars, piano, strings… etc etc – but a new album is on its way. meanewhile im at the national rehearsin( and singin) hard with kneehigh theatre for a matter of life and death!
doug - 25 03 07 - 12:09

I’ve just successfully wrestled with Paypal to buy the album, bit slow me, still better late than never and at least I’ll get it before the new one’s out. What’s the chances of a gig somewhere vaguely near Edinburgh? And when’s “A Matter of Life and Death” on and how interestingly random that will be if it’s a musical verson of the film. Especially if you do the scene with weird eyelid effect. A gift for a mad designer don’t you think? My friends and I seem to have been having an annual Doug Hodge theatre pilgrimage for the last 3 or 4 years. I’ve had them on the phone saying “So – what’s he in this year then?”. Middlemarch on DVD can only keep ‘em happy for so long.

molad – as its called… apparently… is on at the national theatre – olivier from um 30th april til 23rd june – kneehigh are a kind of clowning circus company based in cornwall – i love their playfulness and specially their music. so come along for an annnual visit! each friday we’re plannn to take over the foyer and have a drink with the audience and play – open mic some stuff, til we get thrown out. not sure if itll happen every friday but thats the plan so far. i love the film – this is a pretty free form version of it!
doug - 05 04 07 - 21:38

Doug does Stairway to Heaven circus stylee. Ah my life is complete. I’ll put it to the committee.

Hi Doug

A friend of mine went to see the play last week – they said it was the best piece of theatre they’d seen in a long time ‘you must go’ he said. At that time, I had no idea you were involved with the production, so it was great to see that you are indeed in that and that your career has been going so well.

By the way – alternative gig venues? How about Downstairs at the Kings Head? I live in Crouch End, so it would be really handy….

By the way ‘Julie’ = old school friend – you were Higgins, I was Doolittle….

nettie - 15 08 07 - 16:21

allo. havent been on the site for a while. just noticed yr back. got 4 of the new songs on guide tracks on myspace if u can face it. but im thinkin i want to start from scratch again. x
doug - 16 08 07 - 22:34

Why do you want to start from scratch again ,thought it was all sounding good?
pat () - 18 08 07 - 10:15

true. i like the songs. i think theyre stronger and truer than last time. and i like the prospective arrangements but.. i think the whole thing of playing them to a click track has made them seem more rigid than they should be and i think the vocal sound – i know its not finished yet – isnt as warm as it should be… some of it is in place but other bits not quite landing. so…. what to do? im going to get this album out this year thats all i know. come hook or crook. and when its ready – maybe a big gig at the donmar?
doug - 24 08 07 - 21:29

Hi Doug, Howzit going …bizarrely enough..small world, I have someone working for me that knows you …she worked at the Piccadilly theatre ..digging for scandal and not getting any. Mark and I are trying to hook up ..soon …but we’re rubbish, I’m living near Brighton now. Gagging to hear the new stuff – keep us posted.
Nettie (of the blog) xx I love this name by the way
Nettie - 11 09 07 - 09:35

its gettin better all the time. apparently. im gonna finish recordin the new songs if it kills me – by the end of the year..meantime i wrote some stuff for absurdia at the donmar which was excitin and now….. im going to birmingham to direct a new shimmerin heartbreakin play called last easter. theres some of the new songs on myspace if u can b botherd. who was the picadilly person? xxx doug ( off the bog).
doug - 11 09 07 - 20:54

Hey Doug – I am going to listen to the songs on myspace …but I don’t have sound on my PC at the moment ..grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr rubbish, and I er…don’t have headfones, and of course you want to know about my technological breakdown…not….! Wow the play sounds cool …I’ll look out for some reviews. The Piccadilly person is a young lady called ‘Laura’ ... she is about 19 Doug…she worked at the theatre rather than part of the cast … I’m loving it that you are ‘off the bog’... Any chance of any London based gigs soon …or even better – Brighton ..you can come and do the open mic session on a Tuesday at the Sky bar in Brighton..if you’re interested, I can put you in touch withe someone and I’ll get some people along – please say you’ll come?????? !! Nettie xxx of the blog of course
Nettie - 18 09 07 - 12:01

Hi Doug

I’ve just bought your album on iTunes – very good! I was just clicking around looking for something different and your name popped up. Don’t know if you remember, but I used to go to school with you (all those years ago)

Hello! Nice blog! What a surprise, you are also a singer! Congratulations. You were terrific as Tertius Lydgate in Middlemarch. Really superb piece of acting, one of my favourite interpretations of a classic! Greetings from Barcelona.
Margarita () - 22 11 07 - 14:46

o gawd. im poorly. got bronchitis but am now going in the right direction – struggling to get back as soon as humanely possible.xxxxxx
doug - 25 11 07 - 17:54

Poor you. Get well soon. My daughter has had cold after cold after chest infection. Time to emigrate to sunny climes I think!
Jo () - 27 11 07 - 20:26

Take care of yourself and don’t go back too soon ! Too many people end up off sick again or is this an allergy to musicals!

Hi doug,

I am a longstanding fan of your work ( same age as you ) but your performance in LES CAGES aux Folles was outstanding…what a great evening.I love the film but you gave it an exceptional edge as all sides of Albins character. We saw you last friday ( bomb scare day in fact my husband ended up in the bar with you..jammy bugger!) and you now have new admirers in our kids too. Will watch to see what you do next…thankyou. kindest regards, Jane x

Hi Doug or is it Tom?

I lived with a bloke called Tom Hodgkinson in Clapham North in the 1980’s. I’ve been watching various BBC TV shows over the last few years from Australia and you’re a “splitter” for Tom. Am I going mad? I’m a bit worried about the music though. I was the musician in the house – not you. If it really is you you certainly moved along since we lived in that cess pool. Cheers Rob

Hi, I have just discovered your songs which I really like and I think you may be interested in coming to play at the Belladrum festival in Inverneshire scotland. Check out http://www.tartanheartfestival.co.uk.. Its on 7th and 8th august If you can send the organiser (who I know well) a link or demo c.d asap you may still be able to be booked in for this year (assuming you are free on these dates), anyway best of luck from Alicia.
Alicia () - 09 01 09 - 18:06

Hi You! In between trips to La Cage, I discovered your other singing talents and have ordered a copy of the Cowley Road CD – still waiting for it to arrive in the post! Would love to hear you live, of course, so please let us know where and when your next performance! Hope you’re having a well deserved rest after the Playhouse run (on holiday in the sun somewhere, I hope!)- see you soon!
As ever, Pam S.
